                                                   NAVAJO CLANS

When a Navajo baby is born, he or she belongs to the clan f the mother. The clan name passes through her to her children. When a young man marries, it must be to someone completly outside his clan. Even though people in his clan are not all blood related, it is considered inappropriate to marry within ones own clan This rule is strictly observed. Should it occur, it would be considered "incest" to the Navajo people.
In the Navajo way, two Navajo's of the same clan, meeting for the first time, will refer to each other as" brother or sister " Navajos that are cousins in the American sence, think of each other as "brother or sister" in the Navajo sence.

For the Navajo (as with many tribes), the
storytellers used legends to pass important
cultural infomation from one generation to the
next. As this legend is told, "Spider Woman"
was a mythological woman who lived atop
Spider Rock. There she created beautifully
intricate weavigs. One day a very curious little
girl climbed Spider Rock. She wished to learn
how the Spider Woman crafted such wonderful
creations. Astonished at the young girl's
courage, the Spider Woman revealed her
creative secrets; whereupon the little Navajo
descended from the rock and taught her
people how to duplicate the magnificent
weavings of the Spider Woman.

In the house of long life
there I wander
In the house of happyness
there I wander
Beauty before me
with it I wander
Beauty behind me
with it I wander
Beauty below me
with it I wander
Beuuty above me
with it I wander
Beauty all arround me
with it I wander
In old age traveling
with it I wander
On the beauty trail I am
with it I wander
